That means a lot of the doors we get called on are hanging from track brackets that were installed on jambs built to the framing standards of that era - narrower stud spacing, thinner header lumber, and hardware that's been through fifty or sixty winters of expansion and contraction. Over that many decades, brackets loosen, track bolts back out a quarter turn at a time, and a rail that used to sit dead plumb starts to lean a few degrees. Add a cold-climate freeze-thaw cycle, and a track that's slightly out of alignment in October can bind hard enough to pop a roller clean out of the channel by January.

An off-track door is not a same-day mystery once we're standing in front of it - most calls come down to one of three things: a bent track section, a snapped cable letting one side of the door drop, or a roller that's worn down enough to ride out of the channel on a bump. We check alignment on both tracks first, because a door can look fine on the side you're standing on and be a half inch out on the other. If the bottom bracket has pulled away from the jamb, that tells us the wood behind it may be tired, not just the hardware.
We don't guess at torque on the track bolts. Springs on a door that's off track are often still under load, and forcing a door back onto bent track without checking spring tension first is how people get hurt. So the job starts with making the door safe to handle before it starts with making it move again.
If the track is straight and the rollers are just out of the channel, re-seating the door and re-tightening the bracket bolts against solid framing usually settles it. If the track itself is bent - which happens more often than people expect once a door has been forced past a jam - we replace that section rather than trying to hammer it back straight, because a track that's been bent once flexes easier the second time.
Worn rollers get swapped whether or not they caused the original problem, since a roller that's thin enough to jump once will do it again within a season. We check the cable and drum on both sides, because a door that drops crooked on one side will keep stressing that same track no matter how many times you push it back into place. On older houses in this area, we also look at whether the jamb itself has shifted with age - if the wood behind the bracket is soft or split, no amount of re-tightening holds for long, and that's the honest limitation here: sometimes the fix isn't the track, it's the framing behind it, and that's a carpentry job before it's a garage door job.
A door that's off track usually announces itself before it fully stops working. You'll notice the door running crooked as it goes up or down, one corner lagging behind the other. Sometimes there's a grinding or popping sound right at the moment a roller leaves the channel. Other times the door just stops partway, stuck at an angle, with a visible gap between the roller and the track on one side.
If you can see daylight between the bottom panel and the track, or the door is sitting cocked in the opening even when closed, that's a track problem, not an opener problem. Don't run the opener again once you've seen this - that's how a small misalignment turns into a bent track or a cracked panel. This is common enough across the older housing stock from Highland Park through Metuchen and Piscataway that it's one of the more frequent calls we get, but every jamb and every bracket has its own wear pattern, so what looks the same from the driveway isn't always the same fix once the door's open.
It rarely happens with no warning - a bracket has usually been loosening or a roller wearing down for weeks or months first. The moment it finally jumps the channel often just looks sudden because the door had been running slightly crooked before that, and nobody noticed until it stuck.
Not if the springs are still under tension, which they usually are. A door off track can shift suddenly while you're near it, and a bent track section can snap back. It's a job for someone who checks spring load first, not a five-minute driveway fix.
We replace bent sections rather than straightening them. Track metal that's been bent once flexes more easily at that same spot, and a repaired bend usually fails again within a year, often at a worse moment.
If the door runs crooked, grinds, or stops at an angle mid-travel, that's the track and rollers. If the door won't move at all but sits straight in the opening, that's more likely the opener or the drive mechanism, not the track.
